Elfman and Oz

I'm still geeking out over seeing "Oz The Great And Powerful" on Saturday night.  It. Was. SPECTACULAR!  I loved every single blessed minute!  (And I'm not even really that much of a Wizard of Oz nut, like some are).

Danny Elfman has always been a brilliant composer.  He's not my top favorite- that still belongs to Hans Zimmer- but he is in the top 5.  This is definitely one of his best scores!  A 25 year working partnership with Tim Burton has majorly fine tuned his already amazing craft.

I'll do a review/more stuff about the film later (because you know Lucy Jane is going to sink her metaphorical teeth into those costumes!), but for now I want you to hear my absolute favorite track from the score.  This is called "Fireside Dance" and it made me cry because it's so sweet and romantic.  Enjoy. :)

  2. Oh I am so excited about Oz!! We have another month I think before it comes out over here, but I can't wait. I am mildly (ahem) obsessed with The Wizard Of Oz to start with though... ;)

    1. There was only one tiny thing that bothered me about it, but I'll wait til you've seen it to say what it was. (You'll laugh at me for it!) :)
Also, I kept having to ignore the comments in the internet reviews/youtube/facebook/blahblahblah that compare it to Wicked. So many people were getting their knickers in a twist because "I thought her name was Elpheba" "But the wizard was way older than the witches" and various and sundry other remarks that made me face-palm...

  4. I am glad to hear this, because the reviews have been so bad on it. I am a HUGE Wizard of Oz fan (the original...not Wicked), and was sad to hear it being panned so badly. I may have to see it after all! Happy Monday, Jenny - Tanya

    1. Well???! Did you see it yet?? LOL! I'm trying to figure out how I can rearrange the budget to go see it again before it leaves the 3D theaters! :)

  5. Hans Zimmer is my favorite composer as well, thanks namely to The Holiday and the Pirates movies. Listening to The Holiday soundtrack soothes me like nothing else does. I've heard great things about Oz from others and can't wait to see it!

    1. I saw the movie The Holiday, but didn't really pay much mind to the soundtrack. I didn't know Zimmer did that one! But Pirates is still one of the favs. The 3rd one never gets old ("At Wit's End", "Up is Down", and "I Don't Think Now Is The Best Time", especially!)

Have you heard the score from Cloud Atlas?? It's by Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer, 2 composers I will readily admit I had never heard of (nor seen any of the past films they have scored). I haven't seen the film or read the book, either. I came across the music on someone else's LiveStream feed and completely fell in love! I also found pieces of "Snow White and the Huntsman", which I have yet to see. Gorgeous score.

I'm looking forward to Zimmer's scores for Man of Steel (even though I favor Marvel over DC- a post about that soon!) and The Lone Ranger (Johnny Depp!!!! AAAAUUUGHHH!!!! :D :D :D)

    2. The third Pirate soundtrack is my favorite too!! He just went all out for it. I'm gonna look up Cloud Atlas...and maybe every other thing he's done too. Hahaha.

  6. Nice piece, Cort went and saw this at the end of last week. I didn't get to go, but may go see it myself. She said she felt it really fell short of where it could have gone with this story angle, but she said overall good movie.

    1. It's gotten a fair bit of flak from Oz purists, but apparently enough of us liked it to make it the #1 movie in the world for a little while! LOL
I'm not a huge Oz fan, but I do love "Wicked" and I liked this imagining of the backstory, especially in 3D. I think I liked it when he (the "wizard") was taking in all of the unusual sights when he first arrives. There were a lot of light reflection/refraction effects and the score blended seamlessly with the visuals. Ok, my geek is seriously showing... LOL!
In conclusion, I agree with Cort- plot could have been a bit better, but as a whole it was delicious!
